With the MGIB-AD grant, Veterans can get help paying for educational programs. You will receive your benefits in monthly payments. So by earning the MGIB-AD grant, you can receive up to 36 months of monthly cash payments to pay for tuition, room and board, and supplies. You also get the opportunity to apply for up to $5,400 in additional GI benefits through the $600 Buy-Up Program.
The amount of money you will receive each month depends on your specific circumstances. These are considered factors including How long you served, and The type of education, degree, or training program you select. In addition, the following will be considered:
The specific eligibility “category” you fall into, and
Whether you qualify for other college funds, and
How much or if you have paid into the $600 Buy-Up Program.
To qualify for the MGIB-AD grant, there are core qualifications you must meet. You must have:
- Served at least two years on active-duty.
- A high school diploma or GED.
- Been honorably discharged from active service.
- Served in the U.S. military within the last 10 years.
If you meet these requirements, there are four specific “categories” of further eligibility you must meet that are described by the VA.
Once you have earned the grant, you can spend your cash benefits on college, graduate school, or technical courses like flight training, apprenticeships, or job training.
Like other GI Bills, you can apply for the Montgomery Bill online. There are also additional ways to apply.
